I don't buy your surgeon's explanation one bit. These hernias can be fixed laparoscopically and this would be the preferred method. The liver will not be an issue AT ALL! Since your surgeon has misrepresented to you the option of a laparoscopic repair, it is clear that he/she is not comfortable with the procedure. I would find another experienced laparoscopic surgeon and get an opinion. I have done several hernias in this location laparoscopically without any problem.
