Do you know what kind of mesh you had? If you had UltraPro, there is the possibility of up to a 35% contraction.
There is a newer mesh called Parietex which may only contract about 8%. If you had UltraPro and you pain does not improve with the shots, etc. then ask the surgeon to remove the mesh and replace it with Parietex using absorbable staples or tacks. I don't think this is a real challenging operation.
