It's not difficult to find complications involving the testicles and semen listed as potentials in hernia surgery:
http://birminghamherniaclinic.com/Complications.aspx
"Testicle problems - In 0.3-5% of cases the testicle may become inflamed, swell and cause pain. It may also shrink in size. These problems are due to interference with the blood supply to the testicle."
and:
http://www.whidbey.com/medstaffpemc/Patient%20Consent/Inguinal%20Hernia%20Repair.doc
"5. Testicular damage due to injury to the blood vessels of the spermatic cord; produces pain and swelling of the testicle• Rarely, the testicle may need to be removed due to damage to the testicular blood vessels.
3. Low sperm counts (infertile) due to injury to the duct that carries sperm from the testicle (less than 1%)."
'Watchful Waiting" is accepted as sound advice as long as there is no immediate danger and the patient is aware of the possible risks of incarceration and strangulation associated with not having the hernia repaired. If harrytuttle777's advice encourages people to learn more and become better informed prior to having surgery then it seems like good advice to me.
