It sounds like you need both sides done and a lap repair is a no brainer. The newer mesh is strong and flexible. It was last forever and if done properly, the chance of recurrence is less than 1%. It sounds like the surgeon you have seen is fully qualified to do the procedure. You recovery is much more rapid with the lap repair. In short, I can't think of one good reason in your case to doing an "open" hernia repair.
