I think in open surgery, they have to cut a slot in the mesh for it cover the area where the spermatic cord and other vessels go. In other words, you just can't put down a flat mesh. In laparoscopic surgery, they don't have to cut this slot. Maybe this is one advantage of laparoscopic surgery.
I am still doing a lot of research and have an appointment with the Hernia Institute of Florida for a bi-layer mesh. My instincts are telling me to hold off while I do more research. I will post on north penn hernia board also.
