Hernia MD, Two months ago I had Open Inguinal Surgery using the Bard Plug and Patch. (I know your thoughts on this outdated device and I agree.) I have been in pain radiating throughout my abdomen and groin for weeks. I had an Ultra-sound done to check blood flow to the testicles. Results-normal. I had an MRI done. Mesh looks normal, but a little fluid build-up at site. Is that normal? My surgeon doesn't know why I'm in pain and suggested Pain Management. I had my first Cortisone Injection several days ago and have experienced some relief but discomfort and pressure is definately still there.
However, I recently saw an out of state Hernia Specialist who after an examination, feels all pain problems point to the plug system putting pressure on the spermatic cord, etc. He suggests surgery as an option if pain management doesn't help. Having had much experience removing plugs, he feels, if I decide for surgery, the sooner the better in reference to increased development of scar tissue and damage by the hardening of the plug. He would try to remove all or most of the plug and patch and then repair with the Shouldice method, and if necessary use mesh.
Have you know patients with the Bard plug and chronic pain who have responded well to multiple cortisone injections to become 100% pain free? I'm ready to get this device out of me and start living my life. What is your opinion? Thank-you!
