your instincts are right. DON'T get the Kugel patch. It is heavy weight and contracts into a hard mass. The surgisis patch is an acellular collagen matrix patch made from pig small intestine. It has use in repair of hiatal hernias where it is used to reinforce a primary repair. There is little or NO role for its use in inguinal hernias. It goes AWAY over time. The hernia is more likely to come back. If you are sold on a biologic mesh, I would suggest Alloderm or Stratis made by lifecell. It is a MUCH better product. Because of its very high cost, there is no role for routine use in uncomplicated groin hernias. Why not an open repair with the UHS or a lap repair?
