Hi
I have Inguinal Hernia on the right side and I went to the regular surgeon as well as the Lap surgeon. Regular surgeon advised me to go with open Hernia repair as I do not have hernia on both sides and that I am active and fit athlete in my late 30s. Lap surgeon went over the pros and cons and indicated that at the end of the day it is my choice (both docs work at the same hospital). However with Lap repair, he will repair both sides even though I don't have signs of hernia on the left side. Recovery is faster and the patch is applied inside as opposed to outside in the open surgery.
The way I am looking at this given I have hernia on one side
Lap Option:
1. Minimally invasive and faster recovery
2. Patch put inside thereby pressure from hernia will hold it even better
Open Option:
1. Can be done only on the side I have Hernia
2. Surgeons more proficient in this technique?
I would appreciate if someone can share their insight into what option I should choose.
Thanks,
Sam
