Your surgeon is grossly misinformed. The "Plug and Patch" is a bad technique especially in young active men. The incidence of meshomas is high as well as chronic pain syndromes. Please read the other "horror stories" on this and other sites about patients lives being totally ruined by this procedure. At the recent American Hernia Society meeting, there was a full morning session dedicated to post hernia pain syndromes. What you surgeon has told your is completely inaccurate! The best repair for someone like you is a laparoscopic repair. It is very safe, effective, and allows a very rapid return to unrestricted activities (a few days). If you elect to have an open repair, be sure that NO PLUG is used and the surgeon selects a "light weight" mesh such as UltraPro or the UltraPro Hernia System. Please, Please get another opinion. It will save us all time down the road when we don't have to answer your questions regarding chronic post-op pain syndromes.
