Bad mesh (heavy weight Polypropylene) is being in open surgery by many surgeons because they haven't found out about problems with the mesh or know that there are many safe alternatives. The bard "plug and patch" is the worst product on the market currently. Despite its known problems, it is still the most commonly used product in the USA by general surgeons fixing hernias. The majority of "hernia experts" have given up this mesh long ago. Ask your hernia surgeon or PCP to order a CAT scan or MRI to evaluate your groin. Any revision should only be done by an expert. At the recent AHS meeting, revisions were discussed and are helpful in a high percentage of patients who have been properly selected and reoperated by an expert. One thing is clear, no patients were any worse off after a second operation done by a hernia expert.
