I think the literature leans to lap px having a shorter recovery time with less post-op pain.
For me, in terms how soon I was able to do various activities of daily living, the 2 pxs were similar.
In terms of pain, I had more intense pain the first couple of nights with the open px than with the lap and it was more localized as opposed to a more diffuse pain with the lap. By day 5, my diary notes show when I tried to get up out of a chair the pain would be about a 3 or 4 on a 10 point scale both with the open and the lap px and this progressively improved at about the same pace with both pxs.
