I've sometimes suspected that as well. (Obviously the writers had precedents for that, with "The Wizard of Oz", where the Wicked Witch of the West is after Dorothy for her magic shoes*, and "The Lord of the Rings", where Sauron is after Frodo for the One Ring.)
*The movie version, which is the most familiar nowadays, makes them Ruby Slippers, of course, but the original book called them "silver shoes". (Incidentally, the Wicked Witch of the West has a much smaller role in the book than in the movie - she doesn't show up on stage until Dorothy and her friends enter her lands after being sent there by the Wizard. I wonder if the movie production team beefed up her role after realizing what a memorable performance Margaret Hamilton would give.)
