I always assumed the same thing. (It reminds me a bit of the end of "Prince Caspian", when Reepicheep volunteers to go through the doorway to Earth to show the Telmarines that it's safe, but Aslan refuses, saying that he and his fellow talking mice would be put on display at fairs. )
