A bit off-topic, but I've sometimes wondered how much this interpretation of Dungeon Master as untrustworthy and manipulative was what the production team intended, and how much of it might have been the result of the loose ends in the series framework that I've mentioned before. The series seems to have blended two different scenarios about the children's presence in the Realm: a "Wizard of Oz" scenario (their presence in the Realm is a fluke) and a "Chronicles of Narnia" scenario (they've been summoned to the Realm to deliver it from some great evil). The production team struck me as taking some elements from both scenarios (from the former, the children see their big goal as getting home rather than saving the Realm, and Dungeon Master, when he sends them on these missions, appears to be finding a way home for them; from the latter, all the hints that the children are supposed to be in the Realm), without thinking how they mixed. Perhaps the notion of Dungeon Master as a puppet-master stemmed more from the creative team's not thinking things out than from deliberate design.
(On the other hand, Michael Reeves supported the notion of Dungeon Master as devious in his commentary for "The Dragon's Graveyard" on DVD.)
