Yeah, one of the ways that Kirby and others were screwed by Marvel was the company claiming that the pages were "lost" or "destroyed" when the artists wanted their original art back. I wonder if something like that's why Tramp dropped out of the gaming art biz to become a surly cab-driving semi-hermit.
Good to see that Jeff's doing something positive (and hopefully-lucrative) with the situation.

: How sad - but I know this is not an isolated incident. Wholesale
: destruction of original art was rampant for decades in the comic
: book industry as well. So much art of so many iconic characters
: by so many great artists, lost to the logic that the comics
: company owned the art, the artist had produced it for the
: company and therefore had no say in its disposition, and once
: the art was published in book form, there was no call to keep
: the originals. I would venture to guess part of the reasoning
: was simply the lack of storage space. I'm sure there was a
: similar (and infuriatingly short-sighted) thought process that
: led to Mr. Dee's art being trashed. I'm not sure if I can pledge
: anything to the process of re-creating it, but I'm certainly
: going to pop over to his site and see what's up. Thanks for the
: tip, Tann!

: For all you Dungeons & Dragons old-timers out there (and
: maybe some of you young whippersnappers, too), I thought I would
: give a heads-up to kind of an interesting project going on out
: there. Back in 1980, TSR released the Deities & Demigods
: handbook, a sort of divine Monster Manual . Among the gods that
: appear therein is our ol’ friend Lolth, the Demon Queen of
: Spiders — Tiamat gets a couple of notices and a pic as well.
:
: Apparently, sometime since then, some bonehead at Wizards of the
: Coast destroyed all the original artwork that TSR artist Jeff
: Dee had created of the Egyptian, Norse, and Melnibonean
: divinities, and now Dee is planning to recreate those works if
: he can raise enough pledge money to make it worth his while.
:
: Of course, I know a lot of you out there are, like me, poor — so
: I am not necessarily suggesting that you should pledge. I do
: suggest, however, that if you are nostalgic, or even just
: interested, about the sort of art that was inspiring the
: Dungeons & Dragons crowd in the years when our beloved
: cartoon was being formulated, it might be well worth your while
: to pop over to Jeff Dee’s " Re-Creating my Norse Art from
: Deities & Demigods " or simply to his DeviantArt page
: , and revel in the sheer 1980's D&D go(o)dness.
