Rana is right.
There are hints, but is no direct evidence one way or the other. I believe that the question was never answered on purpose - the writers wanted to leave that open.
I'd explain that statement, but I'm also in the middle of writing a story, so I'll have to wait until that's finished. Sorry, I'd love to chat about it, but I don't want to give too much away before I've had time to post. Many fan written stories provide their own answers to that question and several others.
