I would assume they only have DVD rights to distribute, but yes, that appears to be true. BCI Eclipse, who did the last U.S. set, has sold or been released from their position as a distributor. At first blush, I would guess that it will simply be a reissue of the same masters that BCI used. The only available information seems to be a different number of discs (There will be three instead of the five in the BCI release). There is no list of special features as of yet. Perhaps they are foregoing the special features and cramming them on to three discs?
The cover features different artwork. I was surprised until I realised that I'd seen it before now. It's a collage from the inserts in the BCI set. It certainly looks as if this reissue will be poorly done. I don't know if I'd have good reason to purchase it.
The U.K. set is far superior to any current U.S. version in any case. The last U.S. release from BCI had nice looking menus, but the text was hard to read in some areas, and the original musical scores were deliberately changed for some episodes. The extras in the box and the special features disc in the BCI set were especially good. (Really the only reason to purchase it.)
We will have to see as we get closer to August. Two sets are scheduled for release so far: one with only the first nine episodes (called "Beginnings") and one with the complete series.
Marketing...phfft. I can't fathom why they would do that. ![]()
