Yes, I don't see the point of Merlin being there, except that its perhaps a short-hand for Magician. But then, logically, it confuses the whole notion of this being a distinct plane or place which is fairly clearly implied by the opening credits - are we back in Medieval England now? I can hear the confused viewer asking.
Magicname would have kept us firmly in the world of the fantastic, not some kind of alternative past.
