From in the introductory scenes in the theme, he is referred to as a "magician". ("Fear not. Ranger, Barbarian, Magician, Thief, Cavalier, and Acrobat.")
During the course of the series, the Dungeon Master refers to him a "wizard" several times. (Check the episode, Presto Spells Disaster)
The confusion probably comes from the Dungeons and Dragons tradition of using the two titles synonomously to refer to an arcane (non cleric) spellcaster.
