Hi James,
I checked for you Dad on the SSDI and found his death record, including Social Security number. His Social Security number was issued in Indiana in 1966. Since you have knowledge of his SS number you can order a copy of his SS application, which may tell you his Father's name and Mother's maiden name...please note I say MAY. This will cost you about 30.00, check for details and form on the internet.
Since you have the date of death I checked death index through the St. Louis Missouri Public Library. Dad's obit/death notice appeared in the St. Louis Post Dispatch on 8/11/1994. You can request a copy of the obit through the library at a cost, via mail, of about of $1.25 (I would try this route first).
