It would've been so great if Steve were old enough back then to join the band and tour with us and make the subsequent albums, etc. I can only imagine what that would've been like. There are so many things that that come to mind....our continued songwriting partnership, the interaction between he and Ed King, his added vocals....it goes on and on. But, yes the flute! When we taped shows that had Rainy Day Mushroom pillow like Groovy on the beach and The Joey Bishop Show or the movie Psych-Out I had to fake playing the flute part. I actually used Steve's flute! But since I didn't really play that instrument we just left it out of our live shows. Steve came back into the fold in the mid 1970's when I lived in San Diego and we to regroup as SAC with Randy Seol who also lived down there. Mark Weitz at the time was busy with his tropical fish business and raising a family and wanted nothing to do with being in a band. Ed and Lee Freeman were both on tour with Lynyrd Skynyrd so we figured why not use our famous moniker since it had been vacated.
We played several shows including California Jam in 1974. We did the theme music for Don Kirchner's ABC in Concert series. The odd thing was we performed with a guy named Ben Schlossberg and his magnificent balloon uprising so our name wasn't in the promo package. We went on between Deep Purple and Emerson Lake and Palmer....prime spot.....but disaster ensued...there were pyro technics that were part f the show and the girl that set them off didn't realize that they were exposing on the ground instead of going off in the air...people in the crowd were hit with shrapnel and Ben was hit with a huge law suit . We also did Wolfman Jack's Midnight Special with the same balloon show....it went better that time. Anyway the reason for my ramble is that Bartek did get to play many live shows with us over the years. Mark came back in 2007.
Great meeting you at the Whisky, and another fantastic show! Have another trivia question. As Steve Bartek played the flute on the first album, (but was not allowed to tour with the band per his mother!), who played the flute parts when you guys performed live in concert back in the day? Was that you?
