George is correct! I wrote the songs for SAC, more than for the movie, but it turned out that they were a good fit for Roger & Russ Meyer's vision for the film. We recorded the songs at TTG studios in Hollywood probably right near the end of 1969 and, along with Incense and Peppermints, they became the songs we played in the party scene of BTVOTD. They also appeared on the movie's soundtrack album and on various re-issues and compilations.
Thank-you George.
Paul Marshall wrote both of those songs. He can better tell you the origins. At that point...post Good Morning Starshine, the band was Ed King, Lee Freeman, Gene Gunnels and Paul Marshall.
Roger Ebert who wrote the screenplay of Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls wrote Strawberry Alarm Clock into the script. In 2007 Roger asked us to be the band for the closing ceremonies of his 9th annual Overlooked Film Festival. He requested that we all be in attendance. At that time Mark Weitz, Randy Seol, Steve Bartek, Lee Freeman Howie anderson and I were the SAC.
I contacted Paul Marshall and Ed King to ask if they would join us for a reunion show. They agreed to it and then Gene Gunnels said he wanted to be included too...as he should be. So we all made our was to Champagne, ILL....It was truly a nice experience. We all got to hang out and have fun. At the end of the five day film festival we were on a stage at the university behind a curtain. BTVOTD was the last film aired and after the credits rolled the curtains opened up to expose all nine of us....we did our set to a gleeful and appreciative audience. Paul also did a Q & A afterwards. Very Cool!
Hi: there are two Strawberry Alarm Clock songs on the soundtrack: Girl From The City and I'm Coming Home. What's the story behind these songs and who approched the band to provide them? Were any other songs recorded for the film? What members of the band are on the recordings and who wrote the songs?
