My memories of following the Springfield around are vivid. I felt their sloppiest gigs were with Bruce and their stellar gigs were with Jim Fielder. It didn't hurt that for five straight months, they were doing the early 67 tour, limited to a 20-25 minute set, couldn't screw around....and they basically played the sets rapid-fire to incredible heights. Amazed me every night.
That was their peak imo and I felt (with Fielder), they were moving ahead. Esp all during May. Later, I'd see them doing small shows where the pauses were long, playing totally sloppy, and stage banter the height of unprofessional.
So....they're then with you on the BB tour....which I didn't go see. Were they playing tight? Or back to the screwing around state of mind?
Any of us who followed the band understand the power of their visual.....coupled with the way they moved back & forth from the mics and the mindnumbing volume....which doesn't even account for the music before the band was slamming you back in your seat from the sheer visual power hammering.
So....were they playing dropdead tight? Or in the I-don't-care mode that took over in the spring of 68. What observations did you have as you'd watch (other than Bruce seeming to have a great funk music approach......to me....he was just loose and prone to playing all kinds of wrong notes at shows. I held such a high standard for those guys and was just positive that 1968 just might finally be the breakthrough. Alas......
