THE WORLD IS ON FIRE TONIGHT
AND THIS FLAME THAT GLOWS
IS TOO HARD FOR ME TO FIGHT
DANCING FLAMES
TWISTING TURNING OUT OF SIGHT
SMOKE FILLED EYES
CRYING HOLD ME HOLD ME TIGHT
TEARS OF JOY AND SAD SMILING FACES
WILL MAKE THE SPARK OF LOVE
BURN BRIGHT TONIGHT
THE WORLD IS ON FIRE TONIGHT
AND THE FLAME THAT GLOWS
IS STILL BURNING OH SO BRIGHT
BLAZING ARMS WITH A HEAVY APPETITE
THE SWIRLING FLAMES
FLAMING EVERYONE IN SIGHT
SWEAT FILLED TRACES IN COMMON PLACES
THE PRICE WE PAY TO LIVE
THIS LIFE OF FIRE
FIRE FIRE FIRE
WE'RE ON FIRE TONIGHT
-----------------------
The song was originally called "Colours" (on The Wall) They're here today and tomorrow they're gone...
That was a song about acid!
Those lyrics and most of the music were written by Fred Schwartz who did not receive credit.
Long story short...Fred said the SAC could not have his song but we had already recorded the music. Our manager, Bill Holmes decided he would write his own set of lyrics for the song...which he did. The result - World's On Fire
Fred was in the band that Randy Seol, myself and Steve Bartek were in prior to joining SAC called Waterfyrd Traene. After Randy and I left SAC we rejoined that band and the name was changed to Buffington Rhodes.
Oddly enough, Bill Holmes didn't give himself a song writing credit. Maybe out of guilt for stealing a couple of songs from Mark Weitz and Ed King going back to Thee Six Pence (the other prior SAC band).
Bottom line...It was a love song. Bill never did acid...as far as I know.
Dick Clark chose the song for Psych Out because it fit the scene.

: The "sweat filled traces of common
: places" could represent the physical
: effects o heat and work exhaustion that band
: members as well as the heat generated by the
: large crowds and electricity from strobe and
: other lights, combined with the electricit
: from the electrical amplifiers.The
: "common places" may represent all
: the LA Strip clubs they all shared doing
: gigs at."The price we have to pay to
: hear this type of fight" could stand
: for that fact that the inconvenience of all
: the crowds and heat were well worth
: tolerating if it were for the objective of
: hippies' pursuit of hearing the
: countercultural messages perpetrated by the
: many psych and folk-rock artists.Also,part
: of the "price we have to pay"
: could partially include all the madness
: created by the inevitable craziness of LSD
: trips. All in the name of stopping the
: senseless war in Vietnam and vehemently
: calling for worldwide love, peace and
: understanding and,of course,the human right
: to be free. Many had a price to pay in the
: form of being suppressed by the police at
: they many peace demonstartions of the times
: as well as the counterculture movement felt
: that anyone not of high government of
: business rank was being "kept in line'
: by these co-ordinating forces.That's MY take
: anyway................

: Hmmm, marquee lights, interesting way to
: look
: at it, earle. Then I assume you don't think
: of it as an 'evil' tune as well, right?
: However these words from the song always had
: me stumped:
:
: ''Sweat-filled traces In common places
: The price we pay to hear this type of
: fight''

: I always thought it was a reference of the
: marquee lights all along Sunset Strip
: appeared to burst into flames if one one
: were on a strong LSD trip. But I can see what
: you're getting at,Leon,the "fire"
: may well represent the "vibe" that
: was created by the masses of late sixties'
: hipsters who formed a unified front against
: war and oppression............

: I’ve often heard or read that ‘The World’s
: On
: Fire’ was such a dark tune and do agree to
: certain point especially after it was
: featured in the film Psych-Out during a
: terrifying scene involving a bad trip. That
: was my first introduction to this great tune
: and the effect was profound. Since this was
: real jammin' number, always paid more
: attention to the superb musicianship than
: the lyrics however recently, I listened to
: the words more closely and now believe it’s
: actually a happy love filled song recorded
: during the ‘Summer Of Love’. Am I anywhere
: near the ballpark with my new assessment?
