Frank Slay sent the finished music track to Carter to have him complete a set of lyrics around the title Incense and Peppermints.
Frank liked that title, which was Carter's, and he thought the music suited it.
For the rest of the story you need to talk with Ed and Mark.
Frank Slay lives in Del Mar, CA. Maybe you could get his take on this mess....I think it's more of a Holmes mess though.
Apparently he lives in Italy...he owns Akarma Records there.

: I'm just in the process of writing about the
: saga behind Incense & Peppermints,
: hopefully I'll be able to set it all out in
: a positive way.
:
: I know Mark and Ed have some antipathy
: towards John Carter and Tim Gilbert but, as
: far as I can see, the blame for the absence
: of a credit for the SAC guys on the label
: lays with Bill Holmes. Carter was a
: lyricist, not a musician, Gilbert came up
: with the musical adaptions of the original
: 'Happy Whistler' track. I don't suppose the
: original, unadulterated version of the track
: exists any more - it would be cool to do a
: side by side comparison just to see how much
: difference there was between the two
: versions.
