Layout Posted by Trail Nut on May 26, 2009, 10:35 am 70.226.75.X Back a few years ago when I tore out my layout I had an idea of what I wanted. A large layout based on the C&O's Elmdale Sub. It would be housed in a seperate building with it's own heater and air conditioner. Well here I am three years later and still no layout. I have drawn up several plans that I liked but I just couldn't decide what to build. I got to thinking, maybe a small version of the "Dream" layout would work. Here is a sketch of the proposed layout. The Greenville morning local ran south to Lowell and served Belding also. I could model the Greenville yard, Belding and Lowell like they were in the late 40's to mid 50's. The local would pull any Belding cars out of the yard and head south switching Belding and leaving the outbounds there. It would then caboose hop to Lowell where it would switch the customers there, leaving the cars on a siding for train 23 to pick up. It would then caboose hop back to Belding, pick up any outbound cars and run back to the yard. I could also model train 23 (and maybe 22), the westbound train that made most of the pick-ups and setouts at Alma, Edmore, Greenville and Lowell. The layout is small enough for me to build in a relatively short time, based on one of my favorite prototypes and I could slide the time period from 1947 (all steam) to the early 1950's (diesels). Locos I couls use would be PM Consolidations, Mikados, EMD switchers, C&O BL-2's, GP-7's and EMD switchers.  Post a Response

I would operate it with train orders and switchlists. The area at Lowell with the backdrop is where the furnace is, so I have to keep access to it. I would also have to have access to the hidden staging behind Lowell. The Saginaw staging is in the laundry room. TN  Post a Response

It would start in 1947 with PM steam, then move to 1948 with a BL2 on the local. Next is 1952 with a PM switcher and GP7's on the way freight. In 1955 I would use a C&O switcher with a pair of 5900 GP9's on train 23. For 1958 a C&O switcher on the local with a 5900 GP9 and a "yellow stripe" scheme BL2 on 23. Lastly in 1962 a SW9 on the local with a pair of new GP30's on the freight. The time switch would include a few removeable buildings, some freight cars and locos, and newer vehicles. The layout could go from steam to second generation diesels in a 15 year period. TN A photo of my old layout.  Post a Response
