I remember reading an article from Model Railroader years ago. The modeler had a layout that was small, but he had off site staging which allowed for several trains to be run through trains, while one was dedicated to be a local and work the two stations that were modeled on his layout. He would switch eras too. He would remove the water tank and coaling tower from the stream era and just leave the footings in place. He would then switch out the cars for the proper era. He left some vintage cars on the layout and just added modern cars for the era modeling (present time, 80s, 70s, etc.). He did not model any prototype stations, but just had two or three on the layout. That allowed him to run which ever road he wanted, kind of a generic railroad. You could have a lot of operational possibilities with this and it is an attractive option for me to give this consideration too. You do not have to create a large classification yard with all the space needed for a roundhouse. One town could have several industries and a four track yard, that is more than enough to keep a local busy with through trains passing by too! What ever you decide to build, I am sure it will look as nice as your last one. Dan
