I agree, Kitchen Aid 5qt is The Best all 'round machine. Their flat beater vs. the wire whip is best for heavy cookie dough. Use Steve's mixing suggestion to avoid tough cookies.
The only machine I know of that has actual "cookie paddles" is the Bosch, and it's a double intertwined wide plastic beater which may be good, but the unit isn't durable enough for continual heavy duty use.

: I've never looked at Mixmaster beaters vs.
: paddles. But I suspect the beaters had a
: tendency to over beat the dough. This will
: give you a stiff dough with over-developed
: gluten.
:
: That said, try your mixer. Turn it off as
: soon as the dough is mixed and moist. Just
: be careful not to over-mix.
:
: Buy a Kitchen Aid stand mixer -- you'll love
: it. The 5-quart model is a cut-down version
: of the kind found in a commercial bakery.
: Plus, you get a dough hook for bread. They
: can easily handle a 5-pound dough, which is
: sufficient for 6-7 dozen cookies.
