Hi Jenny,
My Mom has alzheimers and it has been very difficult but there are wonderful moments in this disease too (kinda like cancer). Sometimes she is so brilliantly her authentic self it is amazing... all the habits and positions of a lifetime seem to melt away.
A few things to do once you gather the energy to tackle tasks: find out about the social services in your area and what they can offer; find out about assisted living and nursing homes in your area and get onto waiting list now. No one ever complains they got their parent into assisted living too soon.
Also... if your mom is willing get power of attorney for both property and health... this makes all your future paperwork so much easier.
There are some good books out their for folks like us who love someone with this disease.
Best of luck and yes it's very very sad. I seemed to grieve non-stop for my mom when I was in chemo 2 years ago.
Janny
