Holly's got that exactly right. Thyroid does goes out around ya mama's age, Jen, and it's a whopper of a messed up state you can get into. Hit two of my brothers in middle age, my dad too and man, they wandered around fo a good coupla years slowly turnin' to mental and physical mush. 
Mine was breakin' down by the time I was 18, had to have half of it removed at 20 or 21 (in there somewhere) which is extremely young so I kinda new I was gonna face a difficult life, with immune system problems, jes cuz we couldn't get it under control.
The thyroid controls all sorts of things, one of the hormones that works with it affects our cognition. Big time. And they don't test correctly either, it should be done by a proper endocrinologist who knows his stuff is my opinion.
