Jenny, I'm so sorry that your family is at the beginning of this journey. In 1984 I started this process when my mother was demonstrating advanced symptoms--she lived in Ottawa & I was stationed in Los Angeles. I understand the fear distance brings.
There is another possibility which could be compounding her mental state--thyroid. My family history of thyroid problems was clear when mom was first diagnosed. Although it wasn't the total answer it made a difference when she received proper treatment. (I've had horrible problems with my thyroid after bc treatment-but even with established family history I had an incredibly hard time getting a through thyroid diagnosis.)
Thyroid is very underdiagnosed and the older we women get the more likely we are to have "issues" with it.
