Park, Or Sheryl Hartman—Director March 1, 2005 Piankeshaw Trails Educational Park, Inc.— A non-profit Organization located in Greene County will host an educational event called, “School of the Native” When: April 8th 10-3 PM School Groups Only— $1 Per student $2 Per Adult April 9th 10-3 PM Public Hours—$4 IU Students with ID $3 Under 6 Free April 8th—School Day at the park: schools can sign up and bring classes to come and visit with over a 20 historians who will be at stations throughout the park demonstrating ancient Native American Woodland Skills, conducting workshops and giving talks on a variety of topics April 9th—Public Day at the park—time for the community to come and immerse themselves in real Native culture from the past —sample workshops and demonstrations of: —Prehistoric People of Indiana —Native American Village– Native Homes and Architecture Across the Northeast —Children and Family Life in a Woodland Village —Warrior’s Prepare for Battle and Tactical Demonstration — Tour the park trails to learn about Native Plants for food, medicine and utility use —Archaic Arts—Wood, bone, Stone and Copper Tools and how they were made and used —Finger Weaving, Twine Bag Weaving, Cordage, Fire Making, —The Art of Tanning a Hide—the processes used to soften, stretch, flesh and tan hides for clothing —Native Woodland Clothing from Pre-history to 1840—slides, samples and discussions —Storytelling—young “Boy” will tell mesmerizing Native myths and legends —Vendors selling various items related to the 18th century —Food available—Breakfast Saturday from 7-9 AM 10-3 PM Buffalo Burgers & More Among the presenters for this special event include: Bill Spallaza, a Cheyenne Native –Cultural Administrator from Angel Mounds State Historic Site; Dean Evans, Shawnee will be demonstrating stone tool manufacture; Adam Bonney from Owen County will be doing cordage making; Morning Lark Basket of Tuscarora Heritage will be doing Finger weaving; Robert Stewart—will be coming from Ohio and teaching Archaic Arts , cold hammered copper Located in Greene County, 10 miles southwest of Bloomington and IU. PTEP features historical programs for school children and youth groups during the week. It is about one hour distance from Indianapolis and 2 hours from Louisville and Evansville. Event involves some walking on hilly, primitive wooded trails. From Bloomington, take SR 37 south to SR 45 Exit South past Walmart 7..5 miles to the Greene Co. Line Road.
