On February 13 at 7 p.m., the Eastern Greene High School band, led by band director Aaron Burkhart, and the Southern Indiana Wind Ensemble (SIWE), under the direction of Eric Isaacson, will present a side-by-side concert in the Eastern Greene High School gymnasium. The public is invited to attend and admission is free.
The concert will open with the high school students playing works by Gustav Holst, Stephan Bulla, and Clare Grundman. After a short intermission, SIWE will present the second half of the program, playing works by Claude T. Smith, Howard Hanson, and James Barnes. For the final selection of the evening, the high school students will join the musicians of SIWE onstage for a Karl King march entitled Bonds of Unity.
The Eastern Greene High School Band has been involved in many performances throughout the state over the past few years including performing at the Indiana State Fair, playing for the Indiana Pacers, ISSMA Organizational Contests, and several concerts throughout the school year. The Eastern Greene Band is becoming a very active representative of Eastern Greene High School and the entire Greene County area.
Founded in 2007, the Southern Indiana Wind Ensemble is a professional-level group of wind and percussion players from Bloomington and surrounding areas. Many in the group have played professionally, some have music degrees from IU, and a number teach music in area schools, including Eastern Greene band director Aaron Burkhart.
SIWE is pairing with Eastern Greene schools as part of an educational outreach effort, with support from the Bloomington Area Arts Council, the Indiana Arts Commission, a state agency, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency. As part of this effort, members of SIWE will be spending several hours with students from Eastern Greene in the weeks prior to the concert, conducting masterclasses and sectional rehearsals. The side-by-side concert will be the culmination of this educational effort, which SIWE hopes will become a regular part of their concert season.
