These folks are well-known non-payers. If you keep current with the various notary chat boards, you can develop a good handle on which companies to stay away from. When one of them calls me, I will code them in my phone using caller ID. I'll put their name in beginning with with "no-no!" and also I assign a special "no-no" ring so when they call I know it's a bad news company and I don't even bother to answer the phone.
Do a search on this forum and the other notary chat forums for "no no". Also, develop a list for yourself that you keep with you for quick reference.
If you accept a job from an unfamiliar company, check them out ASAP and then turn the job back ASAP if you discover they are a no-no company. Don't believe them when they say:
- All the other notaries are lying
- All the other notaries did not follow our invoicing procedure
- We changed banks and had a snafu with sending checks, but that's all cleared up now
- We are trying to turn things around
- If you do this one for us, we have lots more business to throw your way
- Anything else they say to try to convince you to keep the job
