I have a MFC 8460N, it printed for about 5 months with no quality issues after the drum warning cam on. I average approx 30-45 loan sets a month.
When the warning popped up, I bought a new drum off ebay. It took 5 months before i started to see a few faint and irregular lines with the print quality.
Maybe this will help others as well; I only have bought about 4 new toner cartridges the whole time I have owned this brother ( approx. 2 years ), I buy the toner off of ebay, enough to fill 5 Hi-Capacity Cartridges at a time. I only paid about $35. It's very easy to fill, they come with the instructions and print quality is no different.
The first time I followed the directions it said to empty the remain toner out of the cartridge before refilling. I noticed there was a lot of toner being discarded when toner life stopped. I thought about it and realized the toner cartridge stops because the gear that you reset on refill comes to the end of the teeth not because your out of toner! I tried resetting the gear to see what would happen, I was able to print at least 2 more sets of countrywide size docs sets. then I tried setting the gear again and got half to full doc set. at that point there is not much toner wasted.
Print quality has never suffered and I have saved enough doing this that my next printer will be almost completely offset by the savings.
Hope this gives a few of you some ideas.
