Lisa, apparently you stuck on the ancillary points, and not the subject of the post.
So for you, well.... I'll concede, (even though the spec sheet only lists a 1k cart, a 2.5k cart may exist) you only have to change 4 times, instead of 10 times, per 10k printed (Whowho!)
For those looking for pro's or con's on Brother (vs. unstated, other brands), as stated above, pay upfront, or pay on the back side.... it's up to you.
And it's not just a print cycle per cart issue, it's a total print cycle life of the machine issue. Brothers are throw away machines, HP (and a few others) make business class machines that are (don't get me wrong, they make ones that are not), meant to last hundreds of thousands to millions of pages over their life expectancy. Brothers.... a few years of a typical college students term paper needs.
My HP III, took me from my a College senior year, through 2006 with several million pages printed..... and I still have it as a back up machine.
I bought my HP 4100DTN (used) in 2006, with less than 20K on it, it now has over 250k. (no not all loan docs, I own another business too)
In that period of time, I would have likely needed several new brother machines.
