The high yield cartridge is 2,500 pages per cartridge. My Brother MFC 9420CN yields 10,000 pages per cartridge, but the black cartridge cost nearly $200. I printed an FHA package on the HL-2140, nearly 250 pages per set just fine. It's ultimately your decision, NCNotary, but at least you're hearing from someone who actually has and successfully uses one. While I wouldn't recommend it as your primary printer, it is certainly a great backup, though sometimes I use it as the primary. Haven't had any issues with it. Good luck in your quest for a printer.

: In addition to the PCL issue, it's not
: intended for high volume.
:
: It's cheap up front, but like all
: Brother products, it's the back end
: that's going to kill you with big
: consumable costs.
:
: The specs state 1000 pages per
: cartridge, and 10k per drum. So for
: every 4-5 sets of loan docs, you need
: a new print cartridge. Perfect for
: the student.... terrible for a
: business.
:
: Another caveat, you will need to
: switch back and forth, letter/legal
: trays (plus the cost of that legal
: tray, as it does not come with the
: machine). IMHO, nothing less than a
: two tray machine is worth my time.
:
:
: If budget is an issue, look for a used
: business class machine capable of 10k
: monthly print cycles, and cartridges
: capable of similar numbers.
