Some states require notary seals that are made up only of words; those are verbal. Some states require the state's seal plus words, those are partly non-verbal (see here. In many states, like Vermont, the signatories must also apply seals to deeds; the law generally allows just the word "seal" or the abbreviation "L.S." to serve as the seal, but there is nothing to stop the signatory from using a real seal.
