Hi, Pat, This topic has been debated up the ying yang and back, but to me, it comes down to just how long you want to sit there at the kitchen table. If you just hand them the docs and say "sign here," then that means they are probably going to start reading each page from top to bottom - GAWD FORBID! So, I just say, for example, "This is the note, and it shows your interest rate (point to it), how much you're borrowing (point to the $$) and when you're first payment is due" (point to the date). They say OK and sign. "This is your RTC, you have until midnight of blah blah date to cancel, this explains how to cancel, sign here inidicating I am leaving 2 copies for each of you." They sign. And so on.
Otherwise, I'd be there forever. and all I'd here is "what's this?" and "what does that mean?" And that could lead to all kinds of trouble.
I'm a real minimalist when it comes to this, though, cos I don't want to even come near the UPL line or give them any ammo that they can use later by saying: "But the notary told us such and such ...." This applies especially to any questions on the HUD/Settlement statement, at which time I tell them to call their LO cos that's what they're paying him/her the BIG bucks for... (I don't actually say the last part, though sometimes I'm tempted.)
By the way, how is the husband/wife notary business going? Do you hand off jobs to each other if you get busy? When a signing service/TC calls, do you let them know that either one of you can do the job and do they care if you share?
