Page 43 of the California notary handbook quotes section 1189 of California's Civil Code as saying
"(b) Any certificate of acknowledgment taken in another place shall be sufficient in this state if it is taken in accordance with the laws of the place where the acknowledgment is made."
So if there are indeed recording officials running around rejecting out of state acknowledgements because they don't look enough like California acknowledgements, they're doing the wrong thing.
