Chapter 1
It had been nearly a month since Shelly and Sabin had their big talk. While things had been awkward to start they had fallen into an easy friendship. They had actually discussed getting back together a few times, but Sabin was still uncomfortable with that idea.
The Machineguns had been challenging Beer Money for their tag titles as of late and were close to capturing the gold. Shelly had successfully defended her Knockouts title against Angelina Love at Hard Justice and would be starting a program with Cindy once again that would take them to the September No Surrender show.
Life was going great…or it would have been if Shelly didn’t have to watch her friends’ relationships flourishing while hers lay dead. Some days she didn’t even want to be around all the happy couples.
Just a week after Hard Justice Shelly sat in Sabin’s hotel room. He had invited her over to watch movies. What he had neglected to mention was that Cindy, Alex, Taylor, Greg, Traci and Frankie would also be there. Guess he didn’t trust himself alone with her yet.
Shelly sat at the head of the bed hugging a pillow. Sabin was next to her sitting cross legged, fiddling with the remote. Frankie and Traci lay sprawled out across the middle. She watched as he lovingly rubbed Traci’s slightly rounded belly. She looked away, catching Sabin just looking away from them as well.
“Makes you sick doesn’t it,” he leaned over and whispered to her. “You should see when he starts talking to it.”
“I think it’s sweet,” she whispered back. “They’re happy.”
“Would you two shut up,” Alex called from the floor where he lay with Cindy. “We’re trying to watch the damn movie.”
Sabin tossed a pillow at him. He ducked and it hit Taylor in the face. She let out a surprised squeal.
“Dude! Aim, man,” Greg exclaimed, checking on his girlfriend. He chucked the pillow back. Frankie caught it, glaring from one man to the other.
“Guys, be careful! My unborn child is here.”
“Yeah, it kinda goes wherever Traci goes, Frankie,” Shelly snickered. “Doesn’t have much of a choice and all.” Sabin snorted.
“Whatever,” Frankie mumbled. “Come on, Mama. It’s too dangerous in here for us.” He took Traci’s hand and led her out of the room.
“Night everyone,” Traci called as they left.
“I call bed,” Greg exclaimed, jumping up onto the spot that had just opened up. He yanked Taylor up into his lap. She giggled and rested her head on his shoulder.
“Down in front,” Shelly called.
“Sorry,” Taylor said pulling Greg down to the bed with her. They shared a kiss.
Shelly leaned over to Sabin. “Now that makes me sick,” she chuckled. He nodded making gagging noises at the couple.
“No one’s stopping you from making out, Sabin,” Greg said. “Oh wait…that’s right…you don’t have a hot girlfriend. Sucks to be you.”
Sabin growled something under his breath, but his anger quickly faded when he saw Shelly stretch out a leg and nudge Greg off the bed. He fell with a loud thud onto Alex’s back. Sabin nearly fell off the bed laughing as the two disentangled their limbs.
“Not funny,” Greg barked. “Damn it! Come on, Taylor. I can take a hint! I know when we’re not welcome.”
“Don’t let the door hit you where the good lord split you,” Sabin called, chuckling when Greg flipped him off.
“Which of you pushed him onto me,” Alex asked getting up rubbing his back. Sabin pointed to Shelly.
“Thanks,” she mumbled. “Stool pigeon.”
“You did!”
“Come on, Alex,” Cindy sighed. “It’s late. I’ll give you a nice massage back in our room.”
“Night guys,” Alex said taking Cindy’s hand and all but dragging her out.
“And then there were two,” Shelly said, the awkwardness creeping in.
“You don’t have to stay…unless you want to,” Sabin said, he too felt it.
“What do you want, Chris,” she asked. Inside she hoped he’d ask her to stay.
“Honestly…I wouldn’t mind if you stayed. We could finish off this movie and I think there’s one more in the bag.”
Shelly smiled. “Comedy?”
“What else,” he asked.
“Then I’m in.”
“You want to get under the covers,” he asked.
“Are you trying to seduce me,” she asked with a flirty smile.
He leaned into her, his eyes locking with hers and she felt her breath catch in her throat at the smoldering intensity of them. For a second she thought that he might kiss her. His lips were just mere inches away from hers and then as suddenly as it had happened he had pulled away.
“That was me trying to seduce you,” he replied. “I just thought that maybe you were a little chilly from the air conditioning.”
Shelly’s stomach did a flip flop and she felt nauseous. “Oh,” she breathed. Goosebumps formed on her arms. “Right. Yeah, I am a little cold.” She wondered if he had any idea of the effects he still had on her.
“Need a pillow,” he asked as he got comfortable. She nodded and he handed her the pillow he had tossed at Alex. She settled down next to him, her legs brushing his.
“Sorry,” she mumbled.
“Now who’s seducing who,” he laughed quietly. Shelly turned bright red. “I was kidding.”
“I know. Let’s just watch the movie.”
They settled in to finish off their movies. About halfway through the last one Sabin realized that Shelly had fallen asleep. Not having the heart to wake her, he turned off the movie. He leaned over her, pulling the covers up around her. He stopped himself from kissing her, forcing himself to roll onto his side and go to sleep.
The next morning Sabin was awakened by a strange sound. He sat up rubbing the sleep from his eyes. The room was dimly lit alerting him that the sun hadn’t fully risen yet.
He remembered that Shell had spent the night and looked to the bed next to him. It was empty. He heard the noise that had woke him and realized it was coming from the bathroom. He slid out of bed and heard Shelly groan.
He knocked lightly. “Shell? You all right?” He winced hearing her retching. He heard the toilet flush and the water running before the door opened. “You all right?”
Shelly shook her head and he could see that she was shaky. “My stomach’s all funky,” she replied weakly.
“Come back to bed,” Sabin said, helping her. He crawled in beside her and pulled her into his arms. “You’ll be all right. Just go back to sleep.”
He kissed her temple, holding her. She had been fine when they fell asleep. The sudden turn worried him. It didn’t take long for her to get back to sleep and the sound of her even breathing lulled him back to sleep.
When they woke later that morning Shelly’s head was on Sabin’s chest. She buried her face and inhaled his scent deeply. It’d been too long since she’d woken up feeling so warm and safe.
“Did you just sniff me,” Sabin asked, she could hear the smile in his voice.
“Forgive me. I had a weak moment. You just smell so good,” she said tilting her head back so that she could look up at him.
“Then I demand a complimentary sniff,” he replied, pulling her close to him so he could sniff her hair. “Mmmmm….strawberries.”
Shelly giggled, pushing him away. “My shampoo is passion fruit scented, Chris.”
“Smells good whatever it is,” he said, pulling her close again. This time he buried his face in her neck and nipped.
“Chris,” she sniggered. “Don’t.”
Deep inside she hoped he wouldn’t. It was good to be back in his arms and she was savoring every minute of it.
“It’s good to hear you laughing,” he said sitting up, finally releasing her. “I was worried earlier when you were sick.”
“It’s just a bug,” she said waving off his concern. “I think maybe I ate something bad or something like that. I’ll be fine.”
A loud rapping at the door startled the both of them. “Chris, come on dude,” Alex called through the door. “You said you wanted to hit the gym.”
Sabin slid out of bed and went to the door. “You’re going to wake the dead,” he grumbled.
“I’ll just go,” Shelly said slipping out of bed and grabbing her shoes before slipping past Alex.
Alex turned to look at his friend, a smile on his face as he closed the door. “My man! You guys finally back together?”
“It’s not like that, Alex. She fell asleep watching movies,” Sabin shook his head. “We just slept.”
“I don’t get it,” Alex said furrowing his brow. “You love her, right?” Sabin nodded as he pulled clothes out of his bag. “And she loves you, right?” Again Sabin nodded. “Then what’s the problem?”
“Matt Morgan,” Sabin said making a face.
“Um…he hasn’t gone near Shell since Victory Road. As a matter of fact he turns and walks the other way when he sees her coming.”
“I know, but it’s…I just don’t know what went on when she was with him all those weeks,” Sabin responded. “Just the thought of him…it’s driving me crazy.”
“Driving,” Alex quipped, arching a brow. “Dude, you been batshit crazy since I met you.”
“F*ck you.”
“Not my type, bro,” Alex retorted plopping down on the bed. “So, I think you two need to have another talk. Maybe take her out to dinner. I got it! You’ll be at Greg’s place this weekend to help Taylor move in, right?”
“Yeah,” Sabin called from the bathroom as he changed.
“Then afterwards take her out to dinner and then you guys can go back to being all kissy faced and googly eyed.”
“I don’t think it’ll be that easy, Alex, but it might be a start.” Sabin came out of the bathroom dressed for the gym. “Let’s go. Maybe if we get done early I can see if Shell wants to go to dinner tonight.”
Alex smiled getting to his feet and following Sabin out of the room. If any of their friends had their way Sabin and Shelly would be back together before the end of the year. They just needed a nudge in the right direction.
