FOR SPECIAL SERVICES by John Gardner is a lighter take on secret service agents. In 1981 the Fleming estate commissioned Gardner to write a new series of James Bond novels and this latest one, read by Jeremy Northam who would make a pretty decent film Bond himself, has our hero falling for the villain’s wife, being brainwashed and partnering up with beautiful CIA agent Cedar Leiter, daughter of his old friend Felix. Though all is not as it seems on the surface. (Orion, 8hrs 45mins, £19.99 CD, download available).
