and found it so-so at best and certainly not Sherlock Holmes! Not even Downey Jnr could save it. It was far too busy trying to be stylish (which it failed to do) it forgot all about character and plot ... Jeremy has the looks and the intellect to play Holmes, but he'll never be asked now because both Ritchie and now the BBC have 're-invented' Holmes. I'm not that sold on the BBC's 'Sherlock' either, to be honest. I just don't care for Benedict Cumberbatch (he's a good actor, definitely, but there's something repellent about him, for me. Holmes is not an attractive character so the actor playing him needs some personal charm, however damped down). Martin Freeman is a useful 'everyman' as Watson, but no great shakes as an actor, and the whole thing, again, is attempting to be a triumph of style over substance. The last episode I saw was just about saved by a fabulous turn by Phil Davis as the serial killer taxi driver. I loved Jeremy Brett's Holmes, and our Jeremy, physically, is a little like Mr Brett, so perhaps that makes him an obvious but perhaps not very sensible choice: there would be an opportunity for too direct a comparison. I saw the Holmes film Jeremy was mentioned in connection with. They chose a blond actor I've never heard of before or since (Richard Roxburgh) who was terribly bland, and in fact the whole thing was not especially good, so perhaps Jeremy did well to avoid it. Roxburgh is a similar 'type' to our boy (tall, handsome, etc) but the eyes are dead, I'm afraid ... and so, therefore, is the performance. Here's a clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0JcsE5VNn4
