The film, based on the Sebastian Faulks novel of the same name, is set in Washington against the backdrop of the Cold War. Paltrow plays a diplomat's wife who falls for an American journalist, played by Edward Burns, who puts his career on the line as he covers the presidential race between Kennedy and Nixon.
