I have read this before, but it was a pleasure to read it again. I especially like what he says about looking for the function of the character in the whole story. I think this is where his humility shows its power. I noticed it especially in Gosford Park, where his presence just seems to tie things together, but he is not overstated in any way. I love seeing the power of humility expressed like that. The sensitivity to the whole and to all the individual elements present, and then the self asserted to the perfect degree. Just exquisite. Which is another reason I find it so perfect that I was led to him by Jane Austen. That perfect poise that belies an underlying set of values that quietly assert themselves in the manner the artistry is expressed. I also like what he says about the reason we tell stories. The effect his storytelling has had on me has restored my belief in the value of art, and I had become a bit unsure- not knowing whether it was all frivolity and ego. Oh yes, smitten, I tell you, smitten. I am excited to still have so much to enjoy that I have not yet seen. And can only hope that persistence and patience will yield me the opportunity to see those hard to find treasures!
