My TMWKI report

I went to see The Man Who Knew Infinity on Friday, though a last minute appointment that lasted longer than expected caused me to miss the first 10 minutes or so. (The theater apparently failed to show the customary previews that would have kept me safe.) I came in briefly before Ramanujan leaves Madras. The most recent review posted implied that the film opens with Bertrand Russell's statement about Mathematics. If this is so, then I missed it, though the imdb cast list, in order of appearance, would indicate that he didn't come in until later. While Jeremy's Bertrand Russell had less to do than Toby Jones's Littlewood, he still had a rewarding enough share of scenes. The economy of the writing insured that each line he uttered was insightful and valuable to the establishment of the plot and message of the film -- definitely a worthwhile venture for Jeremy. Russell was portrayed as an early sympathetic influence toward Ramanujan. As to the question of whether Jeremy Irons or Dev Patel would be considered for the Best Actor nomination, or whether they might compete against each other, I would put my money on Patel. I had once written here that he might become the Benedict Comberbatch of 2015 - that, because BC seemed to be in every movie that was released about 3 years ago. Well, TMWKI didn't make it into theaters in close enough proximity to his other 2015 films for that to happen, but I have no doubt this film will raise his stature in the industry. Meanwhile, I hope JN isn't as under-utilized in Our Kind of Traitor as the initial report seems to indicate.
