When is the Premiere Date of The Crown Season 1?
Current The Crown Status: Yet to air (2016)
Netflix has announced that it plans on releasing six-hundred hours of original programming content during the 2016 year. The Crown will be included in this line-up, and will actually be the first UK-based series launched by Netflix. Created by Peter Morgan (of The Queen and Frost/Nixon) and directed by Stephen Daldry (of Billy Elliot and The Hours), The Crown is a drama series that aims to tell the personal story of the Royal family following World War II. It specifically follows Queen Elizabeth II as she navigates the difficult post-war political world of British prime-ministers.
Based on the play The Audience, the series begins with a young, twenty-five-year-old Princess Elizabeth struggling to lead the “most famous monarchy” in the world. Her first obstacle is developing a working-relationship with the powerful and controlling Winston Churchill. The first season of The Crown will consist of ten one-hour episodes which will follow Elizabeth II for one decade each. While the synopsis claims that The Crown will provide a personal look into the history of Buckingham Palace and 10 Downing Street, the series also serves to examine the forces and events that have come to shape our modern-day society. Peter Morgan has elaborated that the series “is not only about the royal family, but about an empire in decline, a world in disarray, and the dawn of a new era”. He continues by stating that “I am beyond thrilled to be reunited with partners from film, theatre and television for this epic project and delighted to be working for the first time with Netflix.”
Netflix’s vice-president of original content, Cindy Holland, apparently feels the same way, as she has publicly stated that “we are enormously proud to be the exclusive home of a series from Peter Morgan and Stephen Daldry”, and elaborates that their “storytelling lives somewhere between television and cinema”.
The cast of The Crown has recently been announced as follows:
Claire Foy as the young Princess Elizabeth
Matt Smith (of Doctor Who fame) as the young Prince Phillip Mountbatten
John Lithgow as the domineering Winston Churchill
Greg Wise as Lord Louis Mountbatten
Vanessa Kirby as Princess Margaret
Jared Harris as George VI
Andy Sanderson as the Duke of Gloucester, Prince Henry
Michael Culkin as Rab Butler
Nicholas Rowe as Jock Colville
Amir Boutrous as Gamal Abdel Nasser
Eileen Atkins as Queen Mary
Harriet Walter as Clementine Churchill
Jeremy Northam as Anthony Eden
Alex Jennings as the Duke of Windsor, Prince Edward
David Shields as Colin Tennant
Josh Taylor as Johnny Dalkeith
Rosalind Knight as Princess Alice of Battenberg
Nigel Corrigan as Alec Kirkbride
While the scope of the series seems rather large, Left Bank Pictures production company’s CEO Andy Harries has reassured potential viewers that “Peter [Morgan] is a writer at the height of his powers, and Stephen Daldry is one of the most entertaining and original film directors in the world.” He assures us that with the skills and experience of these two men, The Crown is “hugely ambitious and surprising, and perfectly captures the changes and complexities of a post-war world.”
While Netflix has made no official statement regarding a premiere date for The Crown, it is expected to occur sometime late this year. For those interested in getting a taste of what The Crown is all about however, Netflix has released its first official trailer (entitled “Sizzle) on YouTube, and it is currently sitting at approximately 595,800 views.
With ITV releasing a series following the life of Queen Victoria, and Netflix releasing The Crown, Damien Timmer (managing director of Mammoth Screen), has predicted that 2016 will definitely be a “year of queens”.
