Last night my husband said he wanted to watch a scary movie for Halloween; I suggested Mimic, especially since I (finally!) got the Blu-ray director's cut recently. (If it were any other JN movie, I'd have jumped to get the director's cut as soon as it came out. But this is the Giant Bug Movie, after all.)
So, I have at long last seen Guillermo Del Toro's reworked version of Mimic. Icky bug guts aside, I think it's quite a good movie this way. I especially like that Jeremy's character, Peter, knows that his wife is pregnant in this version. It gives his motivation to fight the mutant creatures so much more depth! The only down side, of course, is that we don't really get to see Susan's reaction to finding out that she's pregnant. It seems like they dubbed in Peter's words telling her they're going to have a baby. And the movie just ends there.
Why do you think they changed that plot line? I haven't heard Del Toro's commentary yet, so I don't know if he says anything about this in the disc's extras. I wonder if he decided to make the change or if it was imposed on him by the producers.
