Yes, quite strange. Personally, I loved Toni Collette as Harriet. The only role I thought miscast was Polly Walker as Jane Fairfax, as I felt she was too voluptuous and mature. Obviously, a 2-hour feature film can't have the plot detail of a mini-series, so much of the Jane/Frank story was cut. Conversely, an uncut novel of several hundred pages lacks the kind of dramatic pacing required for a successful film. I did prefer the women's costumes in the Kate Beckinsale version, though.
