Dean Spanley My wife and I watched this movie for our 3rd time tonight because we wanted my mother to watch it. I had suggested it to her before but it proved too hard to get into it enough to “get” it. She’s a believer now. It’s been a few years since my last watching and I felt the same sense of delight and warmth that comes from a truly great sleeper of a m…

Hmm. Is this a recommendation, or are you foreshadowing with “nothing could go wrong”?
I will certainly try to keep this in mind when looking for a Netflix movie. I haven’t been in the mood for adventure or sci-fi like I used to be. It’s period pieces that hit the spot.

No this definitely a recommendation. Simple as that. Sorry if i was too obscure. It’s set in the Edwardian era and quite interesting for that alone. It’s not sci Fi at all. Just a bit of English whimsy.

Yes, the graphic suggests a period piece.

On Amazon Instant Video, too…Looking forward to watching it! Thanks, Larry!

I don’t even have to worry if you will like it. I know you will. Peter O’Toole’s character alone is worth the price of admission. But overall, Sam Neil steals the show.

I loved it, Larry! A gentle, lovely, moving film….It’s become a favorite!

I really love the ensemble they put together for the movie. These are really top notch actors and doing a wonderful job of bringing to life a very quirky story. Didn’t it surprise you about the relationship with the dog memories and the tokay? Very funny thing to do and Sam Neil makes a potentially stupid idea work and work so well that it makes you laugh. If you watch it again you will notice how many references there are to dogs — one of the early scenes, Peter O’Toole refers to the dean as that man with a dog collar (in the beginning). Glad you watched it

Larry, I attempted to watch it last May but I didn’t remember it until about 15 minutes in. Then stopped watching as I absolutely detested O’Toole’s character. Because of your recommendation, I stuck with it this time and watched the whole thing. I’m so glad you and others enjoyed it.

OK, so you didn’t care for it that much. O’Toole’s character changes through the movie and ultimately is resolved to his past and redeemed in his soul. Great stuff — now, admit it.

A pathetic old man who made everyone miserable for countless number of years, then his character changes during the last 10 minutes of the film, and he is redeemed? Bosh! Reincarnation no less. Bah, humbug.
However, I admit the acting was indeed excellent. O’Toole made me hate him; Sam Neil made me want to pet him; and Jeremy Northam needed to be smack up alongside the head to give him some spine.

I love this film!!! My wife loves this film. We bought the DVD and have seen it several times since our first viewing. The whole cast is great and O’Toole is especially brilliant. It helps that we are fans of Jeremy Northam – Especially in The Winslow Boy, Emma, and An Ideal Husband.
Maybe it’s not for everyone, but I thought the character development was excellent and the storyline was moving. Also really funny in spots. I give it 5 stars.
So glad we got a chance to meet. It figures that we both appreciate this movie.

Don’t forget “Enigma” with Kate Winslet. Yes, Northam is always superb. I’m glad you mentioned “An Ideal Husband” — one of Wilde’s best and most interesting stories and Minnie Driver steals the show!
Yes, I’m so glad we connected, too. Thanks again to Rushbabe for setting things up.
